Marine Weather Discussion for N Atlantic Ocean
NWS Ocean Prediction Center Washington DC
359 AM EDT Thu May 23 2019

.FORECAST DISCUSSION...Major features/winds/seas/significant
.weather for the North Atlantic Ocean W of 50W from 30N to 50N.

Over the short term today through Fri night, the 00Z guidance has
remained generally consistent, and in good overall agreement. We
will populate winds with the 00Z high resolution Warw winds for
today into early Fri eve, as the Warw model appears to be
verifying well with the late evening ASCAT pass which indicated
winds to around 20 to 25 kt over the outer northern NT2 waters,
well off the northern Mid-Atlantic coast. For most of Fri night
we will then populate wind grids with the 00Z GFS, and use the
smart tool which places the stronger first sigma layer winds
over the most unstable locations, and slightly lower 10 meter
winds over the more stable areas. Using these winds we will
maintain the previous gale warnings, and expand them to cover
the Gulf of Maine, and all of the Georges Banks waters later Fri
into Fri night in the stronger cold air advection in the wake of
the low and cold front, while maintaining gales ahead of the
front, near the north wall of the gulf stream tonight into Fri.
We will cap winds from the Warw model at 35 kt or so for now, as
it indicates spotty storm force winds in the W to SW wind field
ahead of the front Fri, with these stronger winds likely in and
near more intense thunderstorms crossing the waters. Also of
note, there will likely be an increase in the threat for intense
thunderstorms across the waters mainly off the New England and
Mid-Atlantic coasts later today, tonight into Fri. Caution is
advised for very strong winds potentially exceeding gale force
and very rough seas in and near the stronger thunderstorms that
impact especially NT1 and northern into central NT2 waters later
today into Fri. The overall timing of the developing low and
associated cold front forecast to cross the waters remains
relatively unchanged from the past few OPC forecasts, with the
low crossing the northern Gulf of Maine later tonight, then
tracking E and SE and reaching a position near 41N 60W by 00Z
Sat. The associated trailing cold front will cross NT1 or the
New England waters late tonight into early Fri, and push further
SE over northern and central NT2 waters during Fri. The front
will then push S into the southern NT2 waters Fri night as high
pressure overspreads waters N of the front. The thunderstorm
threat will also diminish with the passage of the cold front
from NW to SE over the region Fri and Fri night.

Over the medium range, we will continue to populate winds with
the 00Z GFS using the smart tool as noted above for Sat into Sat
night, with gales associated with the low moving E of the waters
by early Sat as the high pushes further E and SE over the area,
and the front weakens over the far southern portion of the
waters. High pressure will dominate the waters by later Sat into
Sat night as it slowly shifts toward the S and SE. By Sun, we
will transition our wind grids more toward the 00Z ECMWF winds
as the ECMWF appears to be a little more consistent than the
GFS and remaining global models, with the next cold front and
low pressure area approaching the New England and Mid-Atlantic
coasts Sun morning, then crossing these waters Sun afternoon
into Sun night, while high pressure remains over the far
southern portion of the offshore waters. Low pressure will then
move E and SE away from Georges Bank early Mon as the front
moves further S toward the southern NT2 waters. Weak high
pressure will develop over most of the region later Mon into Mon
night as the front stalls and weakens over the southern NT2
waters. At this time, it does not appear likely that any
sustained gale force winds will develop over the waters during
the medium range. There will, however, be another increasing
threat for thunderstorms ahead of the cold front crossing the
waters Sun, Sun night into Mon, with locally very gusty winds
and very rough seas in and near any of the stronger
thunderstorms. Forecast confidence will be slightly above
average throughout the next 3-5 days over the waters.

.Seas: Sea heights range from 1 to 3 ft over waters just off
the New England and northern Mid-Atlantic coasts, to 6 to 8 ft
over the outer portion of the NT2 waters according to the latest
observations and altimeter data. Both the 00Z Wavewatch and 00Z
ECMWF WAM models appear to have verified quite well over the
offshore waters early this morning. For the early morning
package we will populate grids with a 50/50 blend of these two
models for today into Sat evening, then to better match the wind
forecast transition more toward the 00Z WAM for later Sat night
through Mon night. We will boost sea heights up to 10 percent or
so over and near the north wall of the gulf stream later tonight
into Sat to better account for the stronger winds which are
forecast to occur in this region, as guidance typically under
performs in this region with this type of pattern.

.EXTRATROPICAL STORM SURGE GUIDANCE...No significant positive
surge events are expected during the next few days. Consult your
local National Weather Service forecast for more detailed
information.

.SYNOPSIS FOR NEW ENGLAND WATERS...High pressure will shift SE
of the region today into tonight. Developing low pressure will
track E over northern New England and approach the Maine coast
tonight, move SE and offshore later tonight into Fri, then track
E and SE of the area Fri afternoon into Fri night. A high
pressure ridge will gradually build across the area behind the
departing low Sat, then shift E and S of the area Sat night as
another cold front approaches from the W. Weak low pressure and
the associated cold front will pass SE over the waters Sun into
Sun night, followed by weak high pressure building in from the W
later Sun night into Mon night as the weak low moves SE away
from the region.
