S-41X Marine Weather Overlays
S-41X is comprised of four product specifications that are under development by the Ocean Prediction Center and Environment and Climate Change Canada, on behalf of the World Meteorological Organization’s Expert Team on Maritime Safety (ET-MS) of JCOMM. These product specifications will outline the content, structure, and metadata needed for creating a fully compliant S-41X dataset. These datasets will be used to create overlays that will be integrated with future electronic navigation systems including Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS).
S-41X is being developed to meet specific requirements set by the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO). These standards are defined under the S-100 Universal Hydrographic Data Model and the International Standards Organization (ISO) 19100 series. S-41X product specifications are intended for encoding maritime weather and sea condition analyses, warnings, and forecasts for situational awareness, planning purposes and hazard mitigation.
The S-100 ecosystem contains many other product specifications for different applications. For more information on S-100 and these other product specifications, visit the IHO Publications website: https://iho.int/en/s-100-universal-hydrographic-data-model.
S-41X contains the following:
- S-411: Dynamic Ice Information
- S-412: Marine Weather Warnings
- S-413: Marine Weather Conditions
- S-414: Marine Weather Observations
