Marine Weather Discussion for N Pacific Ocean
NWS Ocean Prediction Center Washington DC
812 AM PDT Mon Apr 19 2021

.FORECAST DISCUSSION...Major features/winds/seas/significant
.weather for the North Pacific N of 30N and E of 150W.

A high pressure area was to the W of the central offshore waters.
A dying cold front has moved inland over WA/OR and was crossing
the central CA waters. A weak thermal trof was over the central
and S CA this morning. Strongest winds were to 20 kt over the
inner central and S CA offshore waters. Through the day the high
pressure and its ridge will strengthen as it expands N with the
pressure gradient increasing along the central and S CA waters
to about 25 kt or 30 kt today into tonight. Nly winds increase
throughout most of the offshore areas especially over central
and southern offshore waters for tonight into Tue. For the
morning update do not see any reason for any changes to the
grids which look good overall.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
PREVIOUS DISCUSSION...

The 00Z global models are in very good agreement over the entire
forecast period. The best chance for gales will occur in the
coastal waters along the N and central California coast over the
next 48 hours as the pressure gradient strengthens. The gale
winds are expected to remain confined to the coastal zones. A
building high pressure ridge W of the California waters will form
a block over the next 4 days or so, while a low pressure trough
persists along the California coast until late in the week when
a short wave digs SE into the offshore waters weakening the ridge
axis. I will maintain continuity an populate the wind grids
using the GFS over the next 7 days.

Seas...Both the WAM and GFSwave were initialized well at 00Z. I
will populate the wave grids using the GFSwave throughout the
entire forecast period.

.EXTRATROPICAL STORM SURGE GUIDANCE...N/A.

.WARNINGS...Preliminary.

.PZ5 Washington/Oregon Waters...
     None.

.PZ6 California Waters...
     None.
